Meet the Midwives

 
 

Christina Kocis, CNM, MS ~ Director
 

Chris joined the Stony Brook Midwifery practice after a brief tenure at Maimonides Hospital in Brooklyn, N.Y. Chris had twenty years of nursing experience prior to graduating with the first class of midwives from the Stony Brook Pathways Midwifery Program. She is currently Director of the Stony Brook Midwifery Practice.

 
Susan Altman, CNM, MS

Susan Altman, CNM, MS
 

Prior to joining The Midwifery Practice at Stony Brook, Susan practiced midwifery at Beth Israel Medical Center, and Bellevue Hospital and Birthing Center, both located in Manhattan. In addition to her midwifery experience, Susan has spent many years working as a physical therapist, registered nurse and Certified Childbirth Educator.

 

Jessica Hilsenroth, CNM, NP, MS
 

After graduating from the Stony Brook Pathways Midwifery Program in 2005, Jessica's experience includes working as a labor and delivery, postpartum and nursery nurse in Massachusetts, Arkansas and New York from 1995-2005.

 

 
Heather Findletar, CNM, NP, MS

Heather Findletar Hines , CNM, NP, MS
 

Heather started working as a labor and delivery nurse at SUNY Stony Brook in 1997; here she utilized her previous experience as a doula and childbirth educator. After graduating Stony Brook Pathways to Midwifery Program in 2001, she practiced the 'art of midwifery' for two years as a staff midwife at St. John's Queens Hospital. Currently, she volunteers as a teen mentor for her local high school and is past president of the Long Island Midwives, Inc.

 

Marie Frey, CNM, MS
 

Marie began her career in the health field as a Registered Nurse in 1980.  She worked in Psychiatric care, Medical/Surgical nursing and Pediatric Private duty.  She progressed to her maternity career in 1986 as a Labor and Delivery Room Nurse.  She became very involved in patient education, teaching classes on Childbirth Preparation, Cesarean birth, and Breastfeeding.  After graduating from the Pathways to Midwifery Program at Stony Brook University in 1997, she began her midwifery career at Bellevue Hospital and Birthing Center in Manhattan.  She then joined the Stony Brook Midwifery Practice in 2001. She is the mother of three lovely children.

 

 
 

Careen Mauro, CNM, MS
 

Careen graduated form midwifery school in 1983, and was instrumental in the development of the midwifery service at Coney Island Hospital; she remained there until 1994, leaving to work at the Long Island Birthing Center formerly in Melville, New York. Careen joined the Stony Brook Midwifery Practice in 1997 after the close of the Long Island Birthing Center in Melville. Prior to midwifery school, her experiences included 17 years of Maternal Child Nursing.

 
Goldie McBride, CM MS

Prior to becoming a member of The Stony Brook Midwifery Practice, Goldie practiced midwifery at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Manhattan , as well as at a private physician’s office. She has always enjoyed being involved in helping women as evidenced by her years of work as a Lamaze Childbirth Instructor and Breastfeeding Educator. Her academic career includes an AAS in physical therapy, Bachelor’s degree in Women’s studies from Stony Brook and a Master’s in Midwifery from SUNY Downstate.

   

Ann Visser, CNM MS

After graduating from the Stony Brook Pathways Midwifery Program in 1999, Ann worked at St. John's Queens Hospital as a staff midwife and most recently was part of a private practice in Nassau County.  Prior to becoming a midwife, Ann was a Bradley Method Childbirth educator, doula and assisted midwives in the homebirth and birth center settings.
